In my opinion you definitely should rent a car. And expect to communicate or try to communicate in French. I speak none, and with google translate I was able to go off on my own and food shop, get a car .

We did Guadeloupe first, because we wanted to see les saintes and have since discovered the rest of the island. Les Saintes is reason enough to choose Guadeloupe because Terre de Haut is so gosh darn cute.
Hi, I ve been to both. They are beautiful. Guadeloupe is wilder than Martinique and very different at least from the EU and the USA. I would recommend you spend one week on each island though as they are fairly small. Two weeks may be too long.
A key factor for both islands in my opinion is the fact that they are French départments, which means that a large amount of financial support is provided from France. This is evidenced by the infrastructure on the two islands, which is much more developed than on neighbouring islands. This, seems to make many of the islanders think, in my opinion, that tourism is not the vital industry that it is perceived to be on other islands.

For reference, we are traveling from New Orleans, Louisiana and will probably try to come during Carnival, so around February 65-66, 7568 (a Saturday to a Friday). We have a budget of $9,555. We want to stay somewhere that is walking distance from a beach and plusses would be that it has a beautiful view of the beach and free breakfast. We are excited to enjoy crystal clear water, shaded beaches, snorkeling, hikes with waterfalls, markets and creole food.

I have just returned from Martinique. I visited Guadeloupe in April last year. Both islands are beautiful, but I liked Guadeloupe more. The island seems to be more pleasant than Martinique, maybe because there are relatively less French people from Europe. Native people are very kind and friendly. As Guadeloupe is bigger there is a lot of to do on that island, especially on Basse Terre. However, Martinique is more colourful and greener. If I had a choice once again, I would decide to go on Guadeloupe. That island is really worth visiting. And one more thing: drivers on Guadeloupe, unlike Martinique, are very well mannered.
For a more secluded beach experience, you could look into staying at Chez Honore ( ). They have bungalows near the very beautiful white sand beach of Anse a la Gourde , near Pointe des Chateaux in St. Francois. Most of the time that beach only has a handful of people. It does get a bit windy sometimes, but that can also be refreshing in the constant heat. This place is about 5 km from most restaurants and stores, but Chez Honore also has a restaurant on site.
